What is Special Monthly Compensation?

SMC is additional tax-free compensation paid on top of or instead of standard VA disability pay, for veterans with severe disabilities — amputations, blindness, the need for daily care, or traumatic brain injury.

SMC is organized into letter levels (K through T). Most levels REPLACE your standard disability pay with a higher amount. SMC-K is different — it's ADDED on top of your existing compensation, and you can receive up to 3 SMC-K awards.

This calculator estimates based on the situations that qualify for each level. The VA determines your exact level using detailed medical evidence — this is a starting point, not a final determination.

SMC-K compensates for loss of use of a creative organ (commonly erectile dysfunction, often secondary to PTSD, diabetes, or medications), loss of a hand, foot, or other specific losses. In 2026, SMC-K pays $139.87/month, added on top of your standard disability compensation. You can receive up to 3 separate SMC-K awards for different qualifying conditions.
