BACK PAY CALCULATOR
VA Disability Back Pay Calculator
Estimate the lump sum the VA owes you between your effective date and your decision date. Uses historical COLA rates — not a simplified single-rate estimate.
📅 What is your effective date?
Your effective date is the date your back pay starts — not the date the VA made a decision. It's usually the date the VA received your claim.
If you filed an Intent to File (ITF) before your formal claim, your effective date may go back to the ITF date — up to one year earlier. This can add thousands to your back pay.
If you filed within one year of your discharge date, your effective date may be the day after your separation. Check your VA award letter for your exact effective date.
Find your effective date on your VA award letter or at VA.gov.e.g. you had a lower rating that was later increased
COMMON QUESTIONS
VA benefits, explained plainly
VA disability back pay — also called retroactive compensation — is the lump-sum payment the VA owes you for the period between your effective date and the date your claim was approved. Because VA claims can take months or years to process, this amount can reach tens of thousands of dollars for veterans with higher ratings.
