Specially Adapted Housing

For buying, building, or changing a permanent home when a severe service-connected disability requires major accessibility adaptations.

  • Loss or loss of use of more than one limb
  • Certain blindness with limb loss or loss of use
  • Certain severe burns
  • Certain severe respiratory or breathing injuries
Can be used up to 6 different times over a lifetime. VA may adjust the remaining maximum in future fiscal years.
SHA
$25,350FY 2026 maximum

Special Home Adaptation

For adapting a permanent home when the qualifying disability differs from the SAH criteria.

  • Loss or loss of use of both hands
  • Certain severe burns
  • Certain respiratory or breathing injuries
Uses the same 6-use lifetime structure as SAH, with a lower lifetime maximum.
TRA
$50,961 / $9,100FY 2026 maximums

Temporary Residence Adaptation

For adapting a family member's home where the veteran is temporarily living.

  • Must be temporarily living in a family member's home
  • Must first qualify for SAH or SHA
  • Up to $50,961 if SAH-eligible
  • Up to $9,100 if SHA-eligible
TRA is not a separate disability category; it depends on SAH or SHA eligibility first.
HISA
$6,800 / $2,000Lifetime benefit

Home Improvements and Structural Alterations

A separate VA health/prosthetics benefit for medically necessary home improvements prescribed by a VA physician.

  • $6,800 for service-connected disability needs
  • $6,800 for qualifying non-service-connected needs with a 50%+ service-connected rating elsewhere
  • $2,000 for disability needs not covered above
  • Requires medical justification and VA physician prescription
Administered through VA Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Service, not the housing grant office.
